Personality

We first meet Link in the world of Skyloft, a landmass that houses an insular community of Hylians high above the clouds. Both tradition, and religion are heavily emphasized in Skyloftian society, as evidenced by the presence of a long history of knights, and rituals dedicated to the towering statue of the Goddess, Hylia. The island of Skyloft is said to have been sent to the sky because of Hylia's grace and protection. The Hylians are her chosen people, and she in turn, their patron deity.

Despite Skyloft's rich cultural background, we don't see any real evidence to suggest that Link has a deep immersion with the lore of his world. For instance, he's pushed into taking the Wing Ceremony more seriously by Zelda's request, rather than through an intrinsic desire to become a knight. Furthermore, after he does win, he doesn't know how to complete the ceremonial proceedings. In a sense, he operates on a different wavelength than most of the people on Skyloft. In particular, Zelda states that she finds Link difficult to read, and can never be quite sure of what he is thinking. So what is Link interested in?

Sleep. And lots of it.

Or so the Skyloftians believe. Though Link is clearly well liked by the community, and is thought of as reliable person when he's awake, there's no question that he also has a reputation as something of a daydreamer—a person whose mind often drifts along with the clouds, and catches lots of zzz's along the way. The people of Skyloft often tease him about the latter, but with affection. All jokes at Link's expense aside however, we see that he is extremely well adjusted. The portion of Skyward Sword dedicated to Link's life before his journey begins shows us in depth, the nurturing background Link grew up in. In game, Link is not shown to have parents, but he clearly has people who care about him, and the community as a whole is incredibly tight-knit. People on Skyloft look out for one another, and everyone is more or less treated like an extended family member, which is unsurprising because of the nature of Skyloft itself. The island is small, and the number of people are few. As a result of this, Link tends to be very trusting, and eager to give just about anyone a hand.

It's in this idyllic world that we see Link at his happiest. On Skyloft, Link is content to live his life as it comes without a greater sense of purpose or direction to guide him. In many ways, Link is much like your typical teenager. He's even completely clueless when it comes to deciphering Zelda's glaringly obvious romantic attraction to him! In general, the boy engages in activities because he more or less enjoys them, whether it be pondering life's questions, flying through the sky on his Crimson Loftwing, or lending other people a hand. Helping others, we learn, is where Link derives most of his happiness from.

It's also interesting to note that despite Link's naivete about the world at large (having been raised in such a homogenous, small community), he is not a judgmental person. He quickly strikes up friendships with many different races on the Surface, none of whom resemble humans at all. The Mogmas, the Kikwi's, the Goron, and the Parellas all come to trust Link, and help him along on his quest. Link has that rare ability to befriend all kinds of people, through a mix of earnestness, and easy going demeanor.

All in all, he's a friendly, harmless doofus of a person, both of which aren't necessarily bad traits, but Link is decidedly aimless, and left to his own devices, not very motivated. For example, Link doesn't spend nearly as much time dedicated to his training for knighthood as the other students in the Academy, but makes up for it by naturally being something of a prodigy at flight with his Loftwing. The two of them share a bond that is noted to be the strongest bond between human and Loftwing that has ever been recorded in Skyloft's history. This, along with his seemingly privileged friendship with Zelda (the daughter of the Headmaster of the Academy), gives him sort of a free pass for his laid-back attitude.

This is a source of enmity for several students who find Link's carefree approach to life irritating, and irresponsible. As such, Link does have a ring of bullies led by Groose that torment him and his Loftwing, but we see that he doesn't take them too seriously. Rather than becoming angry and losing his cool, he quips, he side-steps, but doesn't escalate tense situations. Consequently, it's Zelda who often stands up more vocally in Link's defense, giving off (and perhaps somewhat validating) the impression that Link is willing to just let people dictate the flow of his life.

This is, of course, far from the truth. What could easily be mistaken for passivity, and weakness is in actuality Link's tendency to shirk responsibility. Where Link can avoid confrontation, he will do so because the fights that revolve around egotism, and alpha male posturing aren't worth the effort. Furthermore, as evidenced by his later friendship with Groose, Link also tends not to hold grudges against people who have done him personal wrong previously.

However, this doesn't mean that the same holds true when the people Link cares about become involved. While it's true that in general, it isn't in Link's nature to assume the worst in people, he does have buttons that when pressed switch him from kind and friendly, to a fierce, unforgiving combatant. Threaten or hurt those he loves and that immediately crosses into unforgivable territory with Link. As we see in Link's first encounter with Ghirahim, no matter how much of a creepy bastard the self proclaimed Demon Lord is, Link does not draw his sword until after Ghirahim admits that he was directly responsible for Zelda's kidnapping.

Link is incredibly loyal to his friends, and as demonstrated by his unquestioning, immediate decision to rescue Zelda when she is kidnapped to the Surface, he will stop at nothing to help a friend in need. It's in this reckless bravery that we see one of Link's greatest virtues: the courage to persist through any adversity. When Link is motivated, he is unstoppable. No matter how fierce, or frightening the opponent, Link will not back down from a necessary fight.

Of course, courage is not Link's only virtue. During his journey to save Zelda, he is repeatedly faced with his own short comings. Despite his best efforts, Link arrives too late to save Zelda twice, and because he couldn't seal Demise quickly enough, he is forced to helplessly watch his closest friend enchant herself into eternal sleep in order to protect the Surface. And finally, due to his naivete in thinking he had won the battle, he watched in horror as Zelda's soul was used to resurrect Demise. These failures all teach Link valuable lessons in responsibility, and duty. No matter how much he wants to save Zelda, it's not enough to be courageous, he must gain the wisdom and power to channel his courage.

And that is essentially what Link comes to learn. Repeated hardship, bitter disappointment and multiple trials set by the goddesses change the youth, and he slowly but surely grows into his role as the Hero of Legend. Link is no longer the same rash, reckless boy who rushes in without thought to save his friend; he becomes a disciplined, trained fighter. It's with these hard-learned lessons that Link becomes able to assemble the Triforce and have his wish granted. The perfect balance between courage, wisdom and power that he comes to achieve by the end is symbolic of his mastery over not only his enemies, but over himself as well.

At the end of his arduous journey though, Link is still able to laugh, and is still able to smile as always. Despite being told repeatedly that he is Hylia's chosen hero, Link never lets his destiny or accomplishments get to his head. In short, Link is much less motivated by the "Hero" business than he is by the necessity of doing what is right. Even after his life is completely uprooted and irreparably changed by the respective manipulations of Hylia and Ghirahim, Link doesn't show any signs of resentment. He is nothing but truly happy to have been able to save Zelda, as well as the friends he has come to make on the Surface. In the end, Link retains his humility, and that same approachability as he did at the beginning of Skyward Sword, but has mentally grown from the derpy teenager into a more responsible, dependable hero that people can count on.

Powers and Abilities

Link is a mid-to-long ranged fighter. HIs expertise is primarily with swords (his weapon of choice is a double edged long sword), but he's also a skilled marksman- a good shot with arrows, and slingshots. He's a fairly agile guy, too. He pulls off parkour-esque feats of athleticism in canon. TL;DR this guy is fairly strong for an ordinary human.

The Master Sword has several magical properties.
1) It houses the spirit of the Master Sword, Fi, who is bound by Hylia's will to aid the Hero.

2) The Master Sword is similar to Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, in that only the chosen hero is able to wield it to its full potential. This is enforced by Fi. She will not aid those who do not have the spirit of the Hero.

3) Since being reforged, the sword has acquired the ability to banish evil. It can seal evil, break evil curses/enchantments, and generally repel evil spirits. Anyone/anything that is not pure of heart will not be able to touch the Master Sword.

4) When Link raises the sword to the sky, it can store sacred energy that can be released as a beam of energy called a "Skyward Strike." Sword beams, basically.

5) And finally, due to Fi's programming, the Master Sword is also capable of dowsing. In game this is used to seeking out specific items or people.
